Los Angeles County Air Show, Inc. Partners With Edwards Air Force Base

Date Changes Expected to Make the Event Bigger and Better!

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – The Los Angeles County Air Show, Inc. Board of Directors and senior leadership at the 412th Test Wing, Edwards Air Force Base, have agreed to begin working toward solidifying a formal multi-year partnership to conduct air shows in the region.

This partnership paves the way to resume air shows at Edwards Air Force Base. The last public air show at the base was in 2009.

Next year, the event is moving from a traditional March time frame to October 18-20, 2019. The air show venues will rotate bi-annually between William J. Fox Airfield and Edwards Air Force Base:

  • ●  October 18-20, 2019 at William J. Fox Airfield, Lancaster, Calif.;
  • ●  October 16-18, 2020 at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.;
  • ●  October 15-17, 2021 at William J. Fox Airfield, Lancaster, Calif.;
  • ●  and October 14-16, 2022 at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

“We’re very excited to put Edwards Air Force Base back on the air show map as “the center of the aerospace testing universe,” said Brig. Gen. E. John Teichert, 412th Test Wing Commander. “This partnership provides an amazing opportunity to inspire and educate adults and youth throughout the entire region and to showcase to the American people what we provide to the war fighter. Edwards is committed to supporting the AV community with the air show at Fox Field in 2019 and at our base in 2020.”

According to the Los Angeles County Air Show Board President, Mike VanKirk, “As we entered into the 6th annual event planning stages, the leadership team at Edwards Air Force Base reached out to open a dialogue about working in tandem on future air shows.”

    – MORE –

VanKirk also said, “We were thrilled to start the conversation, and it quickly became apparent that a formal partnership would provide unique opportunities on several levels. The unbridled passion and commitment we all have in bringing awe inspiring “in the air” performances, static displays and educational STEM experiences to this community, will truly deepen the fan experience.”

This premier air show launched in 2014 at William J. Fox Airfield with participation by several aerospace companies, numerous community sponsors, Los Angeles County 5th District, and the City of Lancaster. During the past five years, the air show has featured premier U.S. military flight demonstration teams including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Navy Blue Angels, F- 22 Raptor team, and numerous premier aeronautical performers, Heroes and Legends discussion panels, and provided STEM scholarships to local youth.

VanKirk went on to say, “With the William J. Fox Field runway construction upgrades scheduled to be in full swing first quarter of 2019, it made sense for our Board of Directors to re-evaluate the timing of the air show. As our strategy session progressed, the conversations with Edwards Air Force Base evolved and a partnership made perfect sense. It’s a natural fit and we are delighted with the opportunities that will make this world class air show even better for 2019 and beyond.”

More details are scheduled to be released in November 2018.

Solar Eclipse Workshops 2017

May 19, 2017

Join Canon Live Learning for our series of Solar Eclipse Photography Boot Camps across the country. These events are designed to help photographers learn how to shoot the eclipse safely and creatively. In our Boot Camps, you will have two opportunities to learn about photographing the solar eclipse — a free lecture/demonstration and an intense hands-on photography workshop.

Register to join us in any of four locations across the United States:

• Costa Mesa, CA
• San Francisco, CA (free lecture only)
• Omaha, NE
• Nashville, TN

A full solar eclipse crossing over from coast to coast is a once-in-a-generation event — an experience you will always remember, but photographing it might not be as simple as it seems. The eclipse will last just about 2 minutes and 30 seconds in most locations and carry the inherent risk of injuring your eyes or destroying your camera sensor.

Preparing for the Solar Eclipse Hands-on Workshop
Join Canon Explorer of Light Ken Sklute or Photography Instructor Dave Henry for an intensive, hands-on workshop on photographing the solar eclipse. This event was designed for the photographer who wants to leave nothing to chance when preparing to photograph the solar eclipse.

In our hands-on workshop, you will learn and practice the essential steps for photographing a solar eclipse:
• How to choose the right camera and lens
• How to mount a solar filter correctly
• How to practice focusing and tracking the sun
• How to create correct exposure using solar filters
• How to exercise personal safety

In addition, you will go through a series of shooting drills where you simulate the 17 steps you will need to take during the 2 1/2 minutes the eclipse travels overhead. There is no room for error with this short time frame, and our drills will help build the confidence you need on August 21st.

After the shoot, you will go back to the classroom where we will work through the steps of post processing your images to export spectacular imagery.

Get Hands-on With The Best Canon Gear
You’ll not only shoot with the best instructors—you’ll shoot with the best gear. Workshop attendees can access a range of Canon “dream gear,” including the latest EOS cameras and lenses, with Canon instructors ready to offer their technical and creative assistance every step of the way.

Try these lenses at our workshop
• EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
• EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM
• EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM
• EF 200 – 400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x
• EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
• EF 400 f/5.6L USM
• Extender EF 1.4x III
• Extender EF 2xIII

What You Will Learn
• General tips & Technique for Solar Eclipse photography — how to plan, what to expect
• How to determine the angle of the sun
• How to put on a solar filter properly
• How to create exposure of a solar eclipse
• Camera settings and shooting techniques
• Sequence drills to help boost your confidence shooting the eclipse
• Safety tips/gear
• Canon equipment considerations from low to high end
• Third-party equipment considerations (tripods & filters)
• Creative considerations — what types of photo opportunities and composition will work best
• What next — what other astro-events to consider shooting?
• What to do with your images after the shoot — editing & printing,

What’s included
• You will have the opportunity to learn and experiment with a range of Canon EOS DSLR Bodies and EF Lenses.
• Expert instruction in the field and classroom from Ken Sklute and support from the Canon Live Learning Team
• Access to the latest Canon gear: L-Series lenses, and Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R, EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 80D bodies.
• 1-2 Professional prints of your work to take home from a Canon Pro Printer

Why Learn with Canon
Canon Live Learning Workshops let you access exclusive experiences where you can develop. In just one day, this fun, hands-on workshop will expand your portfolio, create prints of your favorite images and help you make new friends.

Shoot Side-By-Side With The Pros
You’ll be alongside like-minded photography pros, ready to answer any question —and provide expert advice on how to bring your visions to life, how to maximize your camera’s functions and get creative with lenses.

Personalized Experience
In this intimate setting, you’ll have easy access to instructors as well as the Canon Live Learning support staff. You’ll have all the attention you need to further develop your skills.

Cautions
NEVER look at the sun without accredited and approved solar filtration over your eyes. There are special solar viewing frames that can be used over your eyeglasses or solar viewing glasses for those that don’t wear glasses. Permanent, irreversible eye damage and/or blindness can result in seconds.

NEVER point your camera into the sun without this special solar filter. All camera lenses need an accredited and approved solar filter. Not using a solar filter at eclipse magnifications will ruin your camera in seconds.

NEVER improvise, modify or use general neutral density (ND) photography filters. They are totally insufficient to provide the protection your eyes, and your equipment, need. There are reasons for this that we’ll address in an upcoming article. Buy an approved solar filter. They’re inexpensive and are designed for the task.
