Famed locomotive to steam again

According to its owners and restorers, Southern Pacific locomotive No. 18 will travel the only remaining SP narrow gauge track for the “Slim Princess Reunion” on Sept. 22-24 at the Laws Railroad Museum in Bishop.

A tiny narrow gauge steam locomotive, No. 18, that once rolled through Mojave on its way to be serviced in Los Angeles will once again ride the rails in Inyo County in September.

According to its owners and restorers, Southern Pacific locomotive No. 18 will travel the only remaining SP narrow gauge track for the “Slim Princess Reunion” on Sept. 22-24 at the Laws Railroad Museum in Bishop.For the first time in 63 years, Engine 18, a 1911 Baldwin steam locomotive permanently housed in Independence and recently been returned to operation by a team of dedicated volunteers, will run numerous trips over track it once called home, according to the Carson and Colorado Railway and Laws Railroad Museum.

Back when it was operating, the tiny engine and its sisters were transported through Mojave and the Antelope Valley to SP’s Taylor Yard in Los Angeles on flat cars for service.

At one time it was possible to ride trains from Los Angeles to Nevada via the standard gauge SP line to Lone Pine and the narrow gauge Carson and Colorado over Mount Montgomery Pass.
