A little tip

Focus!

I have seen a lot of images in my time. I am sure you have also. What have you noticed on quite a few? The focus? Or should I say that they are out of focus? Today we are going to learn a few things to help improve our image focus. One of the best way to start with this is to have our camera as steady as possible. Yes, you should use a tripod. This is the best method but they can be very heavy and often times they will anchor you to a spot. Who wants to move after you have taken all the time to get set perfect. Other things you can do is lean yourself against something, this will help you to stabilize yourself. Then you can focus on keeping your camera steady. The “Doggy Leash” method is simple. You attached a thinner, smaller, color of your choice, dog leash to the bottom of your camera. The other end goes under your foot and you pull up until the camera is at a comfortable level for your eye and the leash is tight. This will help stabilize and is a lot lighter than a tripod. If you are trying to get pictures of low things such as flowers try lying down and use your arms as a tripod. Put your elbows securely on the ground and hold your camera steady.  But remember the saying? “One photo out of focus is a mistake, ten photos out of focus are an experimentation, one hundred photos out of focus – that’s a style. ~Author Unknown”  Sometimes a little style can be great!

Review for “New Image Frontiers–Defining the Future of Photography”

My Review,

First off let me say it was quite exciting when I was asked to review Matthew Bamberg new book “New Image Frontiers–Defining the Future of Photography”.  Matthew has written many books and this one is fantastic. The book covers quite a bit of the history and the evolution of the camera and photography. Matthew has interviewed many creditable  people and has included these as an additional opinion  and factual information. The evolution of photography as art is covered, from fashion to photojournalism.  Very interesting reading.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to review your latest.

Helen

Orange County Fair

Wow!

Competing in the Orange County Fair is a little involved. Here is my experience.  In the end you are required to hand deliver a framed picture to the OC County Fairgrounds.

#1 First off, you have to sign up on the website. This includes your name etc.

#2 When competing here it all really starts with having to submit your digital entries.

Once you are logged into the site, you can click the links to upload your digital rendition of the print that will follow. The site is nice and easy to navigate.

#3 After your images are submitted the waiting game begins. They do send a email on every image that is submitted, wheathter accepted or not.  The email informs you of the judges decision,  and any commets they wish to give. It also contains a link, if accepted, to print out the paper work that needs to be attached to the back of your entry.

#4 After the email comes, the images must be framed to the spec of the OC Fair which is a great document on what they want and how.

#5 Delivering the framed images was very simple. We arrived, asked directions to the building , got pointed in the directions and headed that way. It was well marked and easy to find. Once inside the building it got even easier. Signs pointed the direction out for many receiving areas. The photography section had table to lay out your images. Here they where inspected and tagged by the staff. You received a envelope with additional info, a ticket to get in the fair and your tags to use when picking up your images after the fair is done.

This was all pretty simple. Now we have to wait for opening day!

I hate the waiting game!

More to come …….results, judges walk through, etc.

Good luck to all!

Helen

After waiting (ugh!) I had 3 of my images accepted. I had to frame them and deliver them. This was very easy to do. You can drive up to the building at the fairgrounds, follow the signs, which where easy to see, the people take a look at your pictures to make sure the framing and labeling are correct. And that was it!

I was notified that my images won something before I was able to go and see. I was invited to a very nice awards ceremony where they gave all the first place images nice portfolio bags. Very Nice!   My image “Seats” won first place and “Best in Division” for black and white and my other “Chrysler” received a HM. Yeah! I was thrilled.

After the fair is over you of course have to go and pick up your images. This is very simple, someone even helps you get them down . You are also given an envelope of people who are interested in your photo so you can contact them. This is very nice.

So, next year is fast approaching. Get your images ready and Good Luck!

Speedweek

I took my winning print “Another Old One” also called “Chrysler” at Bonneville Salt Flats State Park in Utah. During Speed Week the salt flats become alive with cars, old cars, new cars, fast cars, well I am sure you get the picture.
We always park at the end of the drag strip because that is where the action happens, at least some of it. I had my camera on a tripod and a long lens on, also a cable release. I usually have a circular polarizer on when I shoot on the salt flats to help cut down on the brightness. One more thing, remember shooting on white salt is like shooting in snow, adjust your camera to compensate for this.
Many of the people that are at the race come for the week so they bring a lot of fun stuff to display and take pictures of. If you look close at my picture, on the passengers side, the person sitting in the car is actually a fake skeleton with the bony hand sticking out the window. Like always, when at a place turn around. The best shot might be behind you.
It might surprise you with what you see.
Happy Shooting!
Helen Henry

Adding a Copyright Notice to Images

The copyright symbol ©.

To help protect my images on the web I put my name, the year I took them and a copyright symbol on them before I put them up. The easiest way I have found to do this is on a separate layer. Then to get the © symbol use Option + G [mac], or hold down on the Alt key while typing the 0169 from the numeric key pad [windows] or hold down Ctrl and Alt at the same time and press C (Ctrl+Alt+C). Mac are easier at this. You can always type a copyright the simple way like this: (c). This may not stop someone from taking your images but if a honest person would like to contact you to see about using your images it sure make it easier for them to find you.

Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

The herds of elk here are just fantastic. You can hear the bugle calls all around. They have over 500 elk here. Many with racks that are quite impressive.
